Imptox present at the upcoming Danube Academies Conference

Project Coordinator Prof. Tanja Cirkovic Velickovic from the University of Belgrade will present research on microplastics contaminated seafood.

Taking place from the 18th to the 20th of October in Ljubljana, the conference will unite representatives from academia and research all throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Organized by the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and this time in collaboration with the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the conference has evolved into a lively platform for knowledge exchange and engagement over the last decade.

Representing Imptox and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Prof. Cirkovic Velickovic has been invited to hold a talk, in which she will focus on “Seafood contamination with microplastics: analytically challenged global problem”.

We know today that trillions of tiny particles of microplastics are floating in our ocean waters. These minuscule pieces are eventually consumed by ocean dwellers, including shellfish or other fish. One way for humans to be exposed to micro- and nanoplastics is via the consumption of microplastics contaminated seafood.

Prof. Cirkovic Velickovic and her team at the University of Belgrade are working on the establishment of analytical tools, methods, and standardized protocols to study the effects of micro- and nanoplastics on human health. While various studies currently exist, they are often not comparable because of a lack of standardized methods.

Join Prof. Cirkovic Velickovic on Thursday, October 19th, 2023 at 15.15 to learn more about this highly complex and interesting topic. The conference will take place at the headquarters of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Novi trg 3, Ljubljana.
